Where do you go for a long, sit-down dinner after a show at The Eagle Theatre? In August, the North Atlanta Star wrote that the kind of dinner The Sanctum was built for "usually sends local residents toward Alpharetta, Buckhead or Atlanta." As of this week, the restaurant at 1166 Church Street has posted "NOW OPEN TO THE PUBLIC" on its website, with a link to book a table.
The timing matters more than the opening itself. The Sanctum is taking reservations just as downtown Sugar Hill starts its densest stretch of the year. Its hours line up with nearly every big evening on the October calendar. The exceptions are both Sundays, and one of them is the closing day of Sugar Rush.
What opened on Church Street
The Sanctum serves steaks, seafood and elevated Southern cooking. Owner Lisa Garey has said she wants a more polished level of hospitality than downtown's current casual dining mix. Guests can sit in the main dining room, on the patio, at the bar or in the lounge areas. The Sanctum Lounge offers private dining and handcrafted cocktails.
Longtime downtown diners will know the address. The Church Street property used to be home to Sugar Hill Distillery.
Getting it open took longer than first announced. A Gwinnett Daily Post headline in late May said the restaurant would open "this summer." By August 11, it was still going through inspections, with no first day of service announced. It's now open. Its OpenTable page lists evening slots for October 1 and has 14 diner reviews.
"The Sanctum adds something the district has largely lacked: a restaurant built around a longer evening, reservations, cocktails and a more formal dining room."
That's how the North Atlanta Star described it, adding that the city "has spent years building a walkable center around The Bowl, the Eagle Theatre, apartments, restaurants and small businesses."
The hours decide which nights work
OpenTable lists The Sanctum's hours as Tuesday through Thursday, 5 to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 5 to 11 p.m. It's closed Sunday and Monday. That schedule fits a downtown where most ticketed evenings fall on Fridays and Saturdays. It also fits the farmers market, which the downtown district lists on Tuesdays.
Here is how the next six weeks line up against those hours.
- Thursday, October 1. The Lanier Cluster Story Walk runs from 4 to 7 p.m., with pages of a story posted along a downtown walking route. The Sanctum opens at 5, so families can finish the walk and still make a weeknight reservation.
- Friday, October 2. Marcy Playground plays The Eagle Theatre. Doors open around 7 p.m., and the band goes on around 8. A 5:30 table leaves time to eat before walking over.
- Saturday, October 3. This is the fullest day of the month's first weekend. The Taste of BBQ Festival runs downtown from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It used to be held in Suwanee, admission is free, and it benefits Project Green, a local children's nonprofit. On The Stage Children's Theatre also has two Saturday shows of Peter and the Starcatcher at The Eagle, at 2:30 and 7 p.m. The Sunday, October 4 performance falls on a night The Sanctum is closed.
- Thursday, October 8. Mystery at The Eagle: Night at the Masquerade is a murder mystery dinner with the meal included. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the evening runs until about 9. This is the one October night where dinner is part of the ticket.
- Saturday, October 10. The Sugar Hill Art Market fills the Promenade from 5 to 10 p.m. Its hours almost exactly match The Sanctum's Saturday service, so you can eat first and browse after, or the other way around.
- October 16 to 18. Sugar Rush weekend. More on this below.
- Friday, October 23. Trick or Treat on West Broad Street starts at 5:30 p.m., when part of the street closes to cars. The evening also includes a free screening of Beetlejuice at The Bowl.
- October 24 and 25. How to Train Your Dragon The Musical Jr. plays The Eagle. Saturday is the date that works for dinner.
- Friday, October 30. The Rocky Horror Picture Show shadow cast has shows at 6:30 and 10 p.m. The 10 p.m. show leaves room for a full dinner first. The Sanctum seats until 11 on Fridays.
Sugar Rush, with and without a reservation
The city calls Sugar Rush "the biggest weekend of the year in Downtown Sugar Hill." It's also the weekend where The Sanctum's hours matter most, since the restaurant can serve two of the three days.
Friday, October 16. The free Sugar Rush Kick-Off Concert takes over The Bowl. Doors open at 7 p.m., with performances listed at 8 and 9. The city suggests bringing a chair or blanket. Dinner at 5 or 5:30, then claiming a spot on the lawn by 7, is the cleanest way to do both.
Saturday, October 17. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. It has vendor booths, live demonstrations, performances and the Sugar Hill Arts Commission's Juried Art Show. The Kids Zone has performances by On The Stage Children's Theatre and All Stars Performing Arts Academy, gem mining with the Sugar Hill Historic Preservation Society, a petting zoo, inflatables and food trucks. The Sanctum opens two hours before the festival closes and serves until 11. With the festival crowd downtown, Saturday dinner is the reservation most worth booking ahead.
Sunday, October 18. The festival runs from noon to 6 p.m. The Sanctum is closed on Sundays, so plan on festival food trucks and the rest of downtown's dining for the weekend's last day.
The city says more Sugar Rush details will be announced on sugarrushartsfestival.com. Check the schedule there before you set dinner times around particular performances.
Parking and dress
Parking is the downtown question on any festival weekend. The Sanctum has free on-site parking, though the restaurant says spaces may be limited during peak dining hours and special events. The public Church Street parking deck is one block away, and the restaurant says it is exploring valet service for Winter 2026. On Sugar Rush Saturday or Trick or Treat night, when part of West Broad Street is closed, plan on the deck and arrive a few minutes early, which is what the restaurant recommends anyway.
There's also a dress expectation. The restaurant encourages smart casual or business casual. That's worth keeping in mind on a day that starts at the petting zoo or the barbecue tents. If you're going straight from the festival to dinner, pack a change of clothes in the car, or book a later seating.
November, more spread out
The calendar thins out after Halloween, and most of what's left still falls on nights The Sanctum is open.
- Friday, November 6. Miracle on 34th Street, presented by Player's Guild, opens at The Eagle at 8 p.m. The venue's listing doesn't yet show the other performance dates.
- November 11. The city holds its Veterans Day Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at 10:30 a.m., with the Broad Street Concert Band, a flag raising and remarks. It's a morning event and doesn't overlap with dinner service.
- Saturday, November 14. The Chili Cookoff and Festival runs downtown from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free, and there's chili sampling, vendors, an artist market, family activities and food trucks. The festival ends at 5, when The Sanctum opens.
If you're thinking of booking, OpenTable showed the restaurant had already been booked seven times on the day the listing was captured. For Sugar Rush Saturday and the Art Market evening, reserve well ahead.
A downtown where you can see a show and have dinner within a few blocks is part of what buyers notice when a home near Sugar Hill's center comes on the market.
